Abstract: In order to reduce the environmental safety risk for stockpile of a lead-zinc tailings in Si⁃ chuan, the mechanical activation effect of ball milling was studied using the tailings as sample. The results showed that the quartz and dolomite phases in lead-zinc tailings changed slightly under mechanical force, and a small amount of amorphous phase were produced. Mechanical activation can increase the specific sur⁃ face area. The specific surface area reached largest value of 1 781.40 cm2/g with being ground for 2 h. The mortar specimen was made of lead zinc tailing powder with being ground for 2 h, standard sand and cement. The 3, 7 and 28 d compressive strength and activity index were the highest, in which 7 d compressive strength was 24.3 MPa and the activity index was 61%. The possibility of large scale utilization for the leadzinc tailings was pointed out in the research.
